Signs You Need a New Shingle Roof

An asphalt shingle roof provides excellent durability for its cost. Asphalt shingles also come in a wide array of colors and styles, so homeowners can customize their roofs to personal taste. Eventually, however, all shingle roofs will need replacement. With regular maintenance and repair, the lifespans of these roofing systems extend from 20 to 30 years. To know whether you need a new shingle roof, consider these factors.

Old Age

Even with careful maintenance, all asphalt shingle roofs eventually age to the point where they need replacement. Though the roof may appear perfectly serviceable, old age will leave it vulnerable to catastrophic damage from a storm. If your roof has approached or passed the 20 year mark, have a qualified inspector come take a look.

Missing Shingles

All asphalt roofs will occasionally lose a shingle or two to high winds. Over the years, continual replacement of shingles will lend a roof a patchwork appearance. Roofs that lose more than a few shingles have either gotten old, or were installed incorrectly. Either way, an abundance of missing shingles provides a clear sign that your roof needs replacement.

Granules in the Gutters

Asphalt shingles have granules to protect them from impacts and damage from the sun. Defective or aged shingles will begin to lose these granules in abundance. Once bereft of granules, shingles can begin to curl as they dry out from the sun. To know whether your shingles are losing their granules, check your gutters for signs of the small gravel.
